SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

METHOD 

Eligible candidates shall submit an application and essay by email with the Subject Line stating “Scholarship Program” no later than April 1 of the current year. The Tribal Council will review all applications. The potential two scholarship recipients will be declared eligible by a vote of the Tribal Council as near to May 15 of the current year as possible.

Two additional potential applications will be marked Alternate #1 and Alternate #2. The alternate(s) will be informed that they are alternate(s) and will be contacted if one or both of the winners do not receive the scholarship. These alternate applications will remain under the control of the Tribal Council and the names will remain undisclosed to the Tribe, unless funds are provided to the alternates. Should the winners be ineligible, or not use the entire grant, the first alternate, then second alternate, if necessary, would then be contacted to ascertain if he/she desires to receive the remaining portion of the scholarship. If the funds are not used, then the funds will be retained by the Tribe.

The Tribal Council hopes to offer up to two new $250 scholarships per year in a lump sum, if adequate funds are available. Scholarships will be continued for up to four (4) years of college or related education as long as the student continues to meet the scholarship requirements, and if funds are available.

The Tribal Council shall confirm pertinent qualifications and eligibility before awarding the scholarship grant.

ELIGIBILITY 

Eligibility will be predicated upon the Kansas Delaware Tribe of Indians, Inc. membership rolls as of July 1 of the current year. Candidate shall be a descendant of a Delaware who elected to remain in Kansas and is registered on the 1867 Roll.

The scholarship candidate must be enrolled in an accredited college, university or vocational school and be a full-time student (12 credit hours or more per semester) in an undergraduate or graduate capacity. Full-time nurses training will be accepted.

SCHOLARSHIP REQUIREMENTS

The Kansas Delaware Indians will be forever remembered for the rich heritage they gave not only to the United States of America, but especially to their descendants. Therefore, each eligible candidate is required to submit, with their application, a 500-word essay on the history of the Kansas Delaware Tribe of Indians and how the scholarship will support the goal in preserving our Tribal heritage.

Special accommodations will be made for individuals with disabilities. This may include video or audio files. We will also attempt to make our website accessible for screen readers to accommodate individuals with vision restrictions.

EVALUATIONS OF APPLICATIONS

Each member of the Tribal Council will review each application and essay and will rank the application on a scale of 1 to 5 points, with 1 being low and 5 being high. The grading will be summarized at the May meeting of the Tribal Council. The application(s) with the highest total points will be the winner(s).

SCHOLARSHIP GRANT 

A notice of scholarship award will be sent as near May 15 of the current year as possible. The payment will be made at or after the Annual Meeting.

ADDITIONAL YEAR PAYMENTS

Individuals who are provided a scholarship award are responsible for providing the Tribal Council with their previous year’s report cards to be eligible to receive the following year’s scholarship award, if funds are available. The individual must maintain a minimum of a “C” average to continue their eligibility.
